ABOUT CHRIS BUMSTEAD
Chris Bumstead was born on February 2, 1995, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. He grew up in a sports-oriented family — his father was a competitive bodybuilder, and his older sister Melissa was also involved in fitness. Chris started lifting weights at the age of 14, initially to improve his performance in hockey and football. By 18, he had already decided to pursue bodybuilding seriously.
In 2016, at the age of 21, Chris earned his IFBB Pro card by winning the CBBF Canadian National Championships in the Classic Physique division. His professional debut came the same year at the Toronto Pro Supershow, where he placed second.
His first Mr. Olympia appearance was in 2017, where he finished second to Breon Ansley. In 2018, he again took second place. The breakthrough came in 2019, when Chris claimed his first Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title — beginning a historic five-year reign that lasted through 2023.
Throughout his career, Chris has been open about his health challenges. In 2018, he was diagnosed with a rare autoimmune kidney condition called IgA nephropathy. Despite this, he continued competing at the highest level and managed his condition through careful medical supervision and lifestyle adjustments.
In 2024, Chris announced his retirement from competitive bodybuilding after winning his sixth Mr. Olympia Classic Physique title, cementing his legacy as the greatest Classic Physique competitor of all time.
